anger & self-regulation

Recently, my man and I somehow landed in an increasingly heated discussion about Dutch politics, of all things.

I struggled increasingly with translating my thoughts and view, and as the conversation went on, I felt more and more frustrated and annoyed.
I could feel my body tensing up, my mind and mouth getting ready to use stronger words, a louder voice, a sharper tone.

But as I drew a deep breath, I realized I actually needed something else.

We paused the conversation, and I hit play on one of my favorite playlists so I could dance around the living room.
As I did, I could feel the energy shifting. I felt softer, more open, more willing to be vulnerable - and, leaning into that, I asked my partner to connect and to just hold me for a while. It turned out to be exactly what we both needed.

After I regulated my nervous system through movement, I could not only open up and connect, but also get my point across without any irritation.

One aspect of learning to channel the heat and energy of pitta involves movement.
At its best, pitta can light a fire underneath you and serve as fuel for action, but it can also isolate you and leave you feeling trapped.

Here’s how movement can help:

  • When you’re feeling stuck or mildly annoyed, making the most of small, fluid movements (think wiggling your fingers and toes) can help.
  • But if you’re noticing bigger feelings of annoyance, anger or aggression, as I did, you’ll need to let that energy out - think jumping up and down or dancing to a song.
  • Don’t forget to be mindful of the weather, though; pitta season can be hot, especially during the height of the day, so exercising when it’s cooler or giving swimming a go might be best.

Of course, your road to regulation might look different than this. In case you'd like to figure out together what works best for you, reach out or book a session.

Irina emits a healing energy that just feels good to be with. Each time we've met, I've relaxed into her presence, openness, authenticity and ability to offer support. She has helped me gain the perspective I needed to be more compassionate and gentle with myself. If you're ready to do the hard work of personal growth, I'd highly recommend partnering with Irina.
